The town of Tirupati is one of the most ancient and sacred pilgrimage spots in India. The name 'Tirupati' means the "Lord of Lakshmi," and should have been applied to the village on the Venkat hill, the dwelling of Lord Venkateswara. Tirupati is a bustling little town at the foot of the Tirumalai Hills in the southern tip of Andhra Pradesh. Every day thousands of pilgrims descend on Tirupati, all enroute to the temple of the Lord Venkateswara up in the Tirumalai hills.
The temple is located in the cool of the verdant hills at a height of 890 meters. It nestles in a hollow surrounded by the peaks of the 7 hills of Tirumalai , representing the seven hoods of Adisesha, thus earning the name Seshachalam. The seven peaks are called Seshadri, Neeladri, Garudadri, Anjanadri, Vrishabhadri, Narayanadri and Venkatadri. --
